2021.12.03 19:17 Francl27 My excitement is gone...

I was so excited about the game a few months ago, so excited about the expansion...
Now I'm actually sort of dreading it.
I'm a story/lots of alts player. I like playing the story on multiple characters to see different options etc. I like improving my gear, I like playing CQ on my characters every week... And that update is going to make it so much harder for me to enjoy the game.
- snail pace for gear upgrades with a limit to weekly upgrade parts
- very small story update
- I was excited to be able to switch some of my force users to their mirror spec but now I'll have to use my secondary combat style for that (which will go away with my subscription)
- CQ goal is doubled AND rewards will be limited (weekly cap)
- can't do what I want/when I want because missions will reset daily/weekly and some will not give rewards anymore
- was excited about GS2 but it's going to be more forced content I don't want to do...
It's so disheartening. Unless story mode FPs drop upgrade parts/gear and swapping gear around gives higher rating stuff like it's doing now, I used the math that someone did on the PTS forums and it would take 4 years to gear up all my characters...
Anyone feeling that way? Seriously, the story better be REALLY good...

2021.12.03 19:17 Gionta1222 Why are people complaining about the format of this Event? It makes getting MSPs easier and it's also more FTP friendly.

I am shocked at the complaints I've seen already. How many times have says cost way too much and they were almost impossible to make just one card? Now we have the ability to make them easy with a small amount of collectibles, and raise their overall how we want. Either fast and straight to the cap or slowly over time. It's good for both FTP and PTW players. It also allows us to obtain multiple MSPs easier than before which is fantastic. This type of structure for events is amazing and exactly what the game needed. I'm not a fan of the MSPs they released and I can see that a ton of people feel the same way. But that doesn't change how fantastic the structure of these events are now.

2021.12.03 19:17 Redcoat_Officer Looking for something to read? Why not try this handy list of stories that deserve way more attention than they're getting.

There are a lot of webnovels out there, in every way shape or form. It's the easiest thing in the world to find a webnovel, but it's harder to find ones that match up to your interests, and even harder still to find ones that match your interest and have the quality to be something truly great. To that end, these are several webnovels I've run across on various places around the internet which I feel don't get as much attention as they rightfully deserve. In no way should this be considered a comprehensive list - because I don't think it's possible to have a comprehensive list of good webnovels - but it's definitely a start.
So with that said, here's a list of several stories that I personally feel deserve far more attention than they get. I'm certain that there's something here that'll pique your interest, no matter what your interests may be.

Part 1: Superhero Stories Love them or hate them, when it comes to web fiction you just can't avoid them. With the enormous popularity of Worm, it can be hard to remember that it's far from the only player on the field, even if it is the most largest. Here are some other stories, all offering their own takes on the superhero genre.
Stone Burners is a true hidden gem, following an amnesiac mutant dragon girl who wakes up in an alleyway in a setting that's basically Worm-ish, but with the kitchen sink approach to superpowers, so magic, spontaneous powers and highly advanced technology are all rubbing shoulders with each other. There's eighteen chapters of the rewrite - which is actually updating comparatively often now that it's back from a hiatus - and loads more of the old, unfinished version.
The Legion of Nothing follows a group of high-schoolers as they set out to recreate the hero team set up by their parents. It's more light-hearted than Worm, and I'd recommend it to someone who wants a story where a teenager sets out to become a hero and actually sticks the landing, unlike Taylor.
Mitosis, Literally follows a superhero with a powerful regenerative ability, who finds herself grievously injured in a city-wide disaster. She cannibalises her own body to survive, cutting away the injured flesh, only to find that her other half has itself regenerated, causing a singularly unique existential crisis.
Supervillainy and Other Poor Career Choices is a bit of a complicated one to recommend, because the author had originally planned it as a harem novel before coming to his senses. Consequently, there's a bit of tonal whiplash between the first half of the first book and the rest of the story, with explicit content and tropes that's absent in all the rest. I still very strongly recommend it, because if you can push through that initial false start you're left with a wonderfully character-focused story about scraping a living on your own in a very hostile environment.
I'm not all that far into His and Her Circumstances yet, but it seems interesting enough. It seems to follow two aspiring young supervillains in a big metropolis. The characters are enjoyable, and there's something refreshing about a superhero story set in a gleaming city, after so many near-dystopias and Gotham-lites.

Part 2: Fantasy Stories Fantasy is perhaps the staple genre for webnovels, and you can find fantasy of any variety out there if you look hard enough. Personally, I've never really been interested in the LitRPG side of things, and you'll see that reflected in the following stories.
The Long and Exciting Life of Kreet the Kobold is a criminally under-read series of books because the author insists on writing a complete book at a time and releasing the whole thing onto Royal Road all at once, which is tantamount to suicide on that site. It's a coming of age story following a Kobold whose entire family was killed by adventurers. There are three complete books.
The Morgulon follows a professional werewolf hunter from a family of professional werewolf hunters in a civilisation plagued by werewolves as he has to deal with the ramifications of becoming a werewolf. Its fantasy setting is set a little later than most, with muskets slowly starting to edge out crossbows as the ultimate weapon.
Into The Mire. If you only ever read one thing from this list, make sure it's this. Into the Mire is far better than it has any right to be, with writing worthy of all but the best published books.
It takes place in a really fascinating fantasy setting, where black powder has long since entered the scene in a big way. Rifles are as common as swords, and much more common than magic. The story follows a team of mercenaries as they're hired to head into this swamp in search of some mystery or another, and that's where the story becomes truly unique.
The story does incredible work with its setting, making the swamp feel like a very real and very dangerous ecosystem. It's almost its own character, driving the plot as much as the actual cast. The characters suffer through the terrain, and that suffering fuels their individual arcs. It's a very unique way of doing things. As if that wasn't enough, the first book is entirely complete so you don't need to worry about an abrupt ending.

Part 3: Science Fiction/Post Apocalyptic Stories set in the far future, where things have either gone really well, really poorly, or really well and then really poorly. I've lumped them together because it's all fundamentally about envisioning the future, or at least a possible future, even if it's not a particularly pleasant one.
Ghostified City takes place in a world that's increasingly giving way to mechanisation, and follows Adaman Yimmand, who probably doesn't realise he hasn't met another human being in years, as he breaks his routine and goes to a bar.
Menschenjaeger's protagonist is a thug, and that's not going to be for everyone. Still it's a great look at a post-apocalyptic world in which the sun has gone out and humanity huddles around the flickering streetlights of their stratified cities.
Kano's Necromantic Comedy takes place in a post-apocalyptic world, except this time the apocalypse was probably caused by necromancers. Kano is one of many flesh-constructs that still survives among the vast urban ruins, but she's the best. At least, according to herself.
Onward to Providence is a genuinely unique experience, following genuinely alien aliens. The main character is the proud owner and sole crewmember of an interstellar trade ship, flying through the reef and trading with strange and interesting aliens (as well as strange and interesting humans.) The author is also an artist, and consequently every chapter has beautiful illustrations.

Part 4: Contemporary Stories set in a world you and I might recognise, with petrol-guzzling cars, familiar place names and a distinct lack of elves of any kind. Note that this is contemporary in time frame only, and stories set in the modern day but with hidden depths to them are completely fair game.
It's Only Another End of the World follows the unfortunate Cody as his girlfriend drags him out to watch her rehearse a play called 'The King In Yellow.' Predictably, things get grim from there. This story features some explicit scenes, but it's all in service of the story's commentary on what it means to be human, rather than being purely for smut's sake. It's also downright harrowing at times.
Sokaiseva is a story about a contemporary setting with magic pressing invisibly at the seams, following a child soldier in a New York mercenary company. Covers some heavy topics, but it does so without ever becoming edgy. It's very grim, and the protagonist is pretty messed up in the head, but it seems to be either a journey about her slow recovery or her tragic decline.
The Secrets of Dragons is a story about a girl in the middle of a love triangle, and proof that I'll read anything if the protagonist is a particularly violent female thug. This particular thug is a punk biker chick who gets assigned by her mob boss to play bodyguard to his son at college, which means attending college herself and becoming a cheerleader so she can keep an eye on him during football practice.

In Conclusion I certainly hope these stories have provided enough for you to sink your teeth into, but it's important that you understand that all of these stories represent a snapshot in time. They're what I've found an enjoyed, but who knows what there is to be found tomorrow? Who knows what you yourself might find if you take a chance on Royal Road's Latest Updates page?
Take a chance in your reading instead of just trawling Trending for the most popular stuff. If you find something you like the look of, but your first instinct is to give it a pass because it doesn't have any reviews, then give it a look instead and leave that review yourself, positive or negative.
Finally, if you do find something, why not pop back here to talk about it? Authors thrive on attention, no matter how much they might claim otherwise, and bringing in new readers might be all that keeps a great story from fizzling out.
So I'd like to formally open up the floor here; if you've read something that you feel deserves more attention than it's getting, don't be afraid to link it here. Remember, this thread is for hidden gems, so if you're story's ever made it onto Royal Road's trending page then it isn't really what this post is aimed at. Similarly, please keep it to stuff that you've read, rather than written. I've written a fair few works myself, but I've not listed any of them here because that's not what this is all about.
Apart from that, go nuts!
